Lessons in endurance from the LA Marathon runners

25 May

A few words came to mind when cheering on runners in the LA Marathon today, Memorial Day 2009: Perseverance, willpower, pain, never giving up, courage… ganas!!! To witness such determination and spirit is very inspiring, especially since for these 30 thousand people, running the race is not about winning, but about getting to the finish line and proving to themselves that they made it happen. For them it is running one mile 26 times, not just on marathon day, but also during the long months that prepare them for this. Marathoners are a special breed, get to know one and you are inevitably moved. Even if it takes them more than 6 hours, they finish the 26.2 miles (42 kilometros) no matter what. Here’s a salute to them and the beautiful metaphor for life that they ran today.

Pictures follow from mile 18 at Wilshire and San Vicente… when fatigue starts to kick in and just before “the wall” hits.

Thumbs up! Even after 18 miles, this lovely lady runner manages to smile and inspire.
