Mis “Piensos” on the George Clooney engagement

28 Apr
Sigh...

Sigh…

Upon learning that George Clooney got engaged recently to international lawyer Amal Alamuddin, three things came to mind:

 1. Who is this mystery woman??? (¿Y qué tiene que las otras ex-novias no tuvieron?)

2. Remember that old saying “Más pronto cae un hablador que un cojo,” or “never say never”?  Yet again it proves to be true.

3. I really have to return to my blog so I can vent this out properly in Spanglish on a worldwide open platform.

So here I am, back in the only place where I could fully express my feelings y piensos on this all too important subject (at least for me) and hope that my four fieles lectores/as have not lost faith in me and the Life in Spanglish blog.

(Thank you for your patience. I promise to be here at least once a week.)

As for the future Mrs. George Clooney, let me tell you, I’m impressed. Not that anybody would ask, but since it can’t be me who is the object of his affections, at least I’m happy she’s a smart, accomplished, cultured and successful woman who seems to suit George quite well.

Ms. Alamuddin is 36 years old, was born in Beirut, studied in Oxford and NYU, speaks 3 languages (Arabic, English and French) is an international lawyer who among her clients has defended Julian Assange of WikiLeaks (que tal?) and serves as special counsel to the United Nations and former UN Secretary Kofi Annan. Not too shabby!

After the initial google searches, I found she also has a quirky fashion sense when it comes to shoes.

In few pictures existing in the web so far, she is wearing interesting shoe combos, something I can appreciate. Some of them are kind of weird, but in one of her paparazzi shots she has some sort of eclectic oxford shoes, and I just happen to LOVE oxford shoes. Nada de glam, nada de sexy mama, just really strange and cool black and white shoes with laces. Y sólo por eso, dije, OK, me cae bien… (Nobody ever accused me of being too shallow, just a little bit.) I expect she will now be hounded wherever she goes and we will probably get to see more of that unusual fashion sense.

Yes, I love a good oxford shoe. The future Mrs. George Clooney has similar tastes.

From In Style website. George Clooney and Aluma. I like her oxford shoes- and that's all I need para que me caiga bien.

As for Mr. Clooney, pues no que no tronabas pistolita. After years of saying he was not the marrying type, I guess it was a matter of timing and finding a jet setting-like minded human activist to settle down with. ¿O será que ya se cansó de darle vuelo a la hilacha? At 52, he’s no spring chicken, but he looks as handsome as ever.

Yes, para mí el George Clooney es especial,  and the sentimental fool that I am, I am happy for him. Event though I’ve never met him, we go way back to our “Facts of Life-Roseanne-Sisters-ER” TV days and he has always, always been my most favorite. (He has an upcoming birthday on May 6th).

As for the rest of us, we’ll always have that wonderful little gem of a commercial that makes us wonder, what if I ever got married to George? I’ve posted it before and here it is again for your viewing pleasure.

Dream a little dream, baby.

Bravo Mario Molina, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom 2013

21 Nov

The Presidential Medal of Freedom was handed out today to 16 exceptional Americans, civilians that have made important contributions to this country. It is the highest civil honor anyone can receive in the US. I’m always impressed by this ceremony and the range of all the people who receive this recognition.

As I watched the evening news recap, where they kept focusing on the 2 most famous recipients of the group, la Oprah Winfrey and Mr. William Jefferson Clinton, aka the best president in my humilde opinión, I noticed that in the back row right behind President Obama was a familiar face. Why yes! It was Mario Molina, who also received this award today.

President Obama awards Mario Molina the Presidential Medal of Freedom 2013.

President Obama awards Mario Molina the Presidential Medal of Freedom 2013.

This amazing scientist and chemist happens to have won a Nobel Prize Winner for Chemistry (1995) and is the person who alerted everybody in the world that the ozone layer was going to be kaput if we didn’t do something about the environment asap. But also important to note, Mr. Molina was born in Mexico (México, DF, 1943 to be exact) and he came to the US in 1968 to continue his graduate studies in chemical engineering at Berkeley. ¡Es de los nuestros!

He studied how chlorofluorocarbons are depleting the ozone layer (I guess we need to read more about it.) He continues to study how the environment is affected by all the messed up things que los seres humanos do to this planet of ours. President Obama said, “Today, inspired by his example, we’re working to leave our planet safer and cleaner for future generations.”

So I’m very proud. Even though he didn’t get air time on TV como Oprah, it was nice to see him get this recognition and see him among the group.

Muchas Felicidades, Mr. Molina. Qué honor tan grandeY muchas gracias for all the important work you do.

(The group also included musician Arturo Sandoval, the fearless Gloria Steinem, the talented Loretta Lynn, the first female astronaut Sally Ride (+) and the editor Ben Bradley, among others. A most admirable group of individuals.)

Libros y Movies en Español this weekend en DTLA: Hola Mexico Film Fest & LéaLA

16 May

This weekend sounds just like heaven with libros y películas en español happening all over Downtown LA.

Yes, the Hola Mexico Film Fest and LeaLA Feria del Libro en Español are finally here.

Which only begs the question, why did these two events decide to coincide the same weekend? Nos vamos a tener que dividir entre tantas cosas que queremos ver.

The HOLA MEXICO FILM FESTIVAL, now in its 5th year running, kicked off on May 15 and runs all through the weekend till Tuesday May 22nd. It’s a unique chance to see películas en español that would otherwise be hard to see here in LA. Nunca traen movies mexicanas a menos de que sea en este tipo de festivales. Pero ese es otro asunto.

So if you’re a movie fan, si te gustan las películas en español, el buen party y la gente cool, this is definitely something you need to check out.

This year they are also expanding to include food and music as part of the program, with Bricia López from La Guelaguetza leading the way and a number of visiting Mexican chefs, like Baja California favorite Javier Plascencia, from Mision 19 in TJ, who always delivers amazing, innovative dishes.

Check out the complete sked for the film fest on their website here. The venue is the Los Angeles Theater on Broadway.

Hola Mexico Film Fest

By the way, here’s a movie trailer that made me laugh and is part of the lineup this weekend. Maybe I’ll get a chance to see it. Se llama Suave Patria and it looks like the kind of slapstick dark comedy that’s easy to enjoy. Salen los televisos Adrian Uribe y Omar Chaparro y Héctor Suárez (yes that Hector Suárez, parece que ya regresó) so maybe it’s worth checking out.

As I mentioned recently, something not be missed this weekend is the Feria del Libro en Español de Los Angeles, LéaLA starts on Friday at the LA Convention Center in downtown y se organiza por la Universidad de Guadalajara. It runs through Sunday May 19.

Libros y mas libros en español, conferencias, pláticas y presentaciones. Todo GRATIS (my favorite price) y con algo para toda la familia.

Screen shot 2013-05-16 at 10.06.19 PM

Check out the program here and go support authors and publishing houses, libros en español que otherwise we would never have a chance to buy here.

Books and films this weekend, people. Truly my cup of tea.

From Halloween to Dia de los Muertos, “Catrina” Style

30 Oct

En los últimos años, I’ve noticed a trend here in LA: more and more people are having 3 day costume celebrations starting by trick or treating on Halloween, observing All Saints Day on Nov. 1st, and then and dressing up again on Dia de los Muertos, November 2nd.

Hey, why not? If you’re in the spirit, knock yourself out!

One of the more popular costumes is the elegant “Catrina” mexicana, and this year I decided I’m going to try to recreate the effect.

The nice people from the Suave company (the hair products) contacted me to share a few hairdo’s and styling ideas to go with the costume. If you don’t have anything planned yet – pues ya es hora, people! – here are 2 ideas that were created by famous stylist Leonardo Rocco, who’s worked with Juanes, Paulina Rubio, Angelica Vale, Alejandro Fernandez, mi paisana Lupita Jones, among many others. He is based in Miami, pero es argentino, che! So if you want to be styled by him you have to go visit his salon Rocco Donna Hair and Beauty Art in South Beach.

Here are a few ideas by Mr. Rocco himself and maybe these will inspire you a bit for your Día de los Muertos costume. (I’m sure they’ll be very impressed at the annual Self-Help Graphics fiesta happening in East Los Angeles.)

Side-swept Ponytail with Flowers

  1.  Spray Suave Professionals® Dry Shampoo over hair washed the day before at a 6 to 7 inch distance (10 cm.), making divisions of about one inch as you go. Apply it mostly around the roots and two inches below, where the greatest concentration of oils is. This product not only absorbs oil and refreshes hair, it also serves to add volume, which is very necessary for this type of look.
  2. Once you apply the dry shampoo to all your hair, use the dryer at high heat from the roots downward. Then incline your head and hair forward and dramatically lift it back. Now you can see what a difference the dry shampoo makes and you’ve created volume.
  3. If your hair is not naturally wavy, curl it now to create more volume and texture.
  4. Gently brush the hair off to one side over your shoulder and pull into a low ponytail. Grab a section of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around over the hair tie to cover it.
  5. Finally, spray some Suave Professionals® Touchable Finish Lightweight Hold Hairspray, which offers brushable weightless hold, and complement your look with colorful flowers, fastened to place with bobby pins.

Romantic Updo with Flowers

  1. Shake the Suave Professionals® Volumizing Mousse well for approximately 3 seconds, vand depending on the length of your hair place an amount on the palm of your hand. It will usually be the size of the palm of your hand. Apply the mousse throughout your hair using a wide-toothed comb to cover all your hair. This product is perfect because it adds up to 4 times more body without weighing hair down.
  2. The second step is drying your hair with a round brush, focusing on the roots where we want to create the most volume.
  3. Then, to begin creating the hairstyle, section off the sides of your hair from the ears forward. Keeping the sides of your hair sectioned off, pull the rest back into a low ponytail. Be sure to leave hair a little bit loose and even a bit disheveled, this is not a polished look.
  4. Begin curling small sections of hair, looping them and pinning them into place near the ponytail with a bobby pin. Pin some sections more loosely than others to create volume and shape.
  5. Now take the two side sections of hair and pull them toward the ponytail, loosely pinning them below the ponytail so they frame the face. Curl and loop the ends, and fasten with bobby pins.
  6. Finally, apply Suave Professionals® Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray to set the hairstyle. The benefit of using this hairspray is that it controls flyaways and provides long-lasting hold, so your look will last all night.
  7. Decorate your hair with one or several colorful flowers around the hairstyle to create the final Día de los Muertos style.

    SUAVE Sample Giveaway:

Amiguitos, please leave a comment below and I’ll do a random drawing on Friday, November 2nd for one winner to receive a sample of their products.

Gracias and Happy Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.

Had enough of William Levy yet? Parece que no.

25 Apr

The world’s greatest dancer he isn’t, but William Levy has managed to steal the spotlight on Dancing with the Stars. Lleva 5 weeks and he has become the flavor of the season con sus disque sexy moves and open shirt atuendos. A very “Chippendales” look if you ask me. The ladies in the studio audience go crazy every time he shows up.  Not to mention that Bruno dude…(ya bájale guey.)

This week he made the cover of People (English) and was also featured on People en Español on one of the little corners of the cover. (Yeah, yeah, they figure we’ve known him forever so they bumped him a la esquinita.)

So it seems his game plan is working. Bien dicen que “el que no enseña no vende”. Adding a little heartwrenching Cuban ex-pat story doesn’t hurt either.

But I haven’t voted for him yet. Su salsa no me convence, para ser cubano, you know what I mean? Como que le falta hip-action y mas soltura de movimiento.

Don’t kill me William Levy fan club! I’m just sayin’.

It's been a good week for Mr. William Levy. He made the cover of People (English version) and the top right corner of People en Español, al lado de Gloria Trevi y Chayanne.

L.U.V. = MDNA!

10 Feb

It was a very good week for Madonna, in all her amazing glory.  Her Super Bowl performance last Sunday was one of the best ever. On Tuesday she announced her World Tour for 2012 (she’ll be in LA on October 10th); and according to iTunes, preorders for her new album MDNA hit the top spot in 50 countries.

Amen Madonna!

We’ll have to wait a bit for her new album, which drops on March 26th. In the meantime, here’s her latest video to get the weekend going. It’s from her new single “Give Me All You Luvin'” and it features Niki Minaj and M.I.A., because that’s how you do it in this day and age to stay fresh.

Even NPR practically raves on her existence: Madonna at Halftime: What it Takes to Last.

Don’t you just admire the fact that she’s been on top of her game ever since we met her back in the 80’s?  We all remember when she was still “Like A Virgin” and declaring to Dick Clark on American Bandstand that she was going to rule the world.

She was right, you know.

Ooops! I think La Reina del Sur lost it. El escándalo de Kate del Castillo en Twitter.

10 Jan

This morning  el Twitter Universe de los Latinos is going berserk with retweets of a rant from Kate del Castillo, alias “La Reina del Sur.” And now I’m going to have to resort to my voice in Spanglish. Porque no me explico why the heck she thought it would be a good idea to give the whole world her unsolicited opinion on life. What??

Con todo respeto, because I think she’s a wonderful actress and a professional, I would beg to differ.

¿Kate, qué te pasó? Tú que casi nunca dabas escándalos, y hoy todo el mundo te está mandando tweets medio groseros… You did not need this, especialmente ahora que estás saliendo más en la television gringa. Tanto trabajo que te ha costado. Is this a publicity stunt? Porque ya sabes que dicen que “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.” Maybe that was the plan?

Aqui está un poco del tweet. You can read it entirely here: http://twextra.com/a4t17t

I don’t get it. Not that my opinion matters anyway. I just think it’s a shame for an accomplished actress (si no es que la mejor de México) to go off on a rant about things that nobody cares about, diciendo puras incoherencias, tarnishing her image… Maybe she wants to do away with her “nice girl”  in real life? Quien sabe. I guess tomorrow it will be old news.

Or maybe it has to do with the year 2012 and all those predictions. Some people think this might be a cue to go off on a liberating storm and having their honest voices heard once and for all. Maybe they think “What the hell! If it’s all going to end, I might as well go down with a bang.”

Dando el rol por el “LA Auto Show”

26 Nov

The Honda display at the LA Auto Show.

I love my car, a beautiful VW. But… I hate driving in LA, for obvious reasons.

I think every angeleno has a special relationship/bond with their car. Or their imaginary car they will someday own and remains on their wish list. You know which one I’m talking about. Es el carro de tus sueños que ves que otra persona al lado tuyo va manejando mientras estás atorado en el 405…y de repente te vas en tu daydream driving off into the sunset.

But I digress…

This week every car maker and brand in America had their annual big “dog and pony show” which is appropriately called “The LA Auto Show.”

You still have this weekend to go see it at the Convention Center. The entrance is $12 dollars (parking is another $20 or so) and it’s open until 10 PM. If you’re a car aficionado, then this is something that’s totally worth your time. Get up close and personal with every new car on the market. You can even pretend it’s yours as you slide into it and sit in the driver’s seat, since most of the cars are open to get a sense of what they feel like on the road.

A few things really stood out. The trend this year is to finally convince us, the regular people, that the fuel efficient, eco-friendly, gas saving, “small is the new reality” vehicle is here to stay. It’s no secret that we are all minding our dollars and cents, and oil ain’t ever going to be free, so we might as well start thinking that “smaller is better.”  At least that’s the big push by most of the companies, including the luxury brands. Every brand has some sort of hybrid, electrical or fuel efficient option. Everybody is reinventing itself. The future looks like it’s here when you see the electric plug enchufando al carro en el garage. Could it be that we all drive electrical cars some day?

There’s still many models of gas guzzlers and big ass trucks, so don’t despair. (A los latinos nos gustan mucho los big cars todavía.) It all depends what you like and how much you are willing to spend on your next car. Even if you are of the idea that an automobile is just something that gets you from point A to point B, I think there’s never been a time when the driver has had so many options to choose from.

Go visit the LA Auto Show before it ends and have a little pipe dream yourself. Total, soñar no cuesta nada.

Here are a few images from the show. I had so many I wanted to post, but made a brief selection for browsing purposes.

Germans do cars right. Here are a few Audi pics. They have a beautiful line and are quite popular.

An electrical BMW "Active" can be yours if you lease it for $499 a month, plus deposit.

Looks like the future arrived. The BMW i8 (concept) cars are all electrical. And they are amazing to look at.

The new 5 Series BMW. No wonder it's the ultimate driving machine.

Concept cars by Chevy will be here in 2013. Already sold in Europe.

The Chevy Volt is one of the more popular electrical cars. But I'm not crazy about the design.

Cool display by the new CODA cars. But the car design is so boring, I did not post a picture. It's all electrical and just a basic 4 door sedan.

Mini Cooper: still a very expensive toy car.

The new VW Beetle is amazing. Loved it!

Even Land Rover is going smaller with the Evoque and their new concept cars.

The Mercedes Benz G Series is BACK!! If I had an extra 100 thousand dollars, I would buy this car in an instant. My absolute favorite thing in the show. I don't care if it's big and boxy, this is it. They had stopped making them a few years ago so I wonder if it's back by popular demand.

I could also get a Fiat Gucci. So cool, so hip...so now. Too bad J-Lo endorses it!

Even the inside of the Fiat has the Gucci branding. Nice!

You can also get the Gucci accessories to go with you car, so you'd be all Gucci'd out. Qué fresas!

More people are embracing the new electrical vehicles. Here's the Nissan Leaf, which are now on the road. You hook up this baby through the front outlet and charge!

UPDATE- SATURDAY: A petición de X, Chucho:  Here’s a photo of the X1 car I took and some others that just had to make it to the list. Había muchísimo y quisiera poder subir más. Sorry if the pictures are small, they have to be optimized for the site.

Para X:

Yes, there were Formula 1 models.

I actually took a pic of la moto with my name on it (my initials, always have loved the CBR) but there's a peek of the Target F1 Model in the back.

I know you like the Audi Spyder!

 Para mis sobrinos-ahijados:

Life size Mario Kart model was a big deal!

Me encantó el display de Hot Wheels.

Para mi Papá, que le gustan los Bentleys…

Fit for a king...or a famous hip hop artist.

Pedro Almodóvar Forever! A night @Taschen Beverly Hills

11 Nov

This week, gracias a mis amigas Lucia y Martha, fuimos al book signing de Pedro Almodóvar’s book “The Almodóvar Archives” at the beautiful Taschen Book Store in Beverly Hills.

A few lucky fans got a chance to meet and greet the film maestro, and he is a lovely, funny and charming man. Se me hace que es una persona que se ha de divertir mucho con sus ideas y su creatividad. Imagine what his mind looks like! All those colors popping all over the place, all those stories and visuals of the movies he creates.

As an added treat, también estuvo Antonio Banderas, one of his first actor discoveries all the way back in the late 1980’s, and apparently still a beloved friend after all these years. They had a brief Q&A session which was initially done in English, but as Mr. Almodovar got more animated, he asked for a translator, para poderse expresar agusto. Banderas is currently starring in the latest film, the dramatic thriller “La Piel que Habito” (The Skin I Live In) which is getting rave reviews.

Here’s a few pictures from the event. Truly a memorable evening I shall never forget.

Even after all these years, they still love each other. Pedro Almodóvar and Antonio Banderas had an animated and funny Q&A session for the fans who attended the book signing.

The man, the film genius! Almodóvar was happy to sign copies of his book for his fans.

Two of his biggest fans, Martha Coronel and Lucia Peraza pose with their friend, Pedro Almodóvar.

Here it is, a book signed for a Very Important Person!

Lucia admires the book as they specially package it. The book weighs all of 12 pounds and has all sorts of pictures and memorabilia from all of Almodóvar's films.

The actor Carlos Leal starred in the Almodóvar movie "Abrazos Rotos" with Penelope Cruz. ¡Es muy guapo! Además saludó a Almodóvar muy efusivamente y compró su libro.

This is the carrying box of the book. Only 1,250 copies were made of this special edition.

Charlotte Taschen, one of the Taschen family daughters, flew in from London to present the book.

Todos queriamos "say hello." The Taschen bookstore in Beverly Hills, California. Almodóvar fans crowd the store for a chance to meet him.

At Taschen they have the most beautiful and original books on art, lifestyle, travel, and photography.

My kind of place.

Walking the AIDS WALK LA 2011

18 Oct

The annual AIDS WALK Los Angeles took place last Sunday October 16th and it had an impressive turnout. I’ve done this walk for 3 years in a row and this year I noticed people were happier and much more spirited. Maybe it had to do with the weather, which was Biu-Ti-Ful…a bright, crisp, spotless LA Sunday morning, perfect for a 6 mile (10K) walk on the West Side.

I walked as part of the Macy’s Team, thanks to the invitation of my friend Olivia. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, Macy’s is committed to the community and especially to the AIDS cause, donating millions of dollars each year. (So think of that every time you shop and know somehow it comes back to benefit someone else.)

It was fun to rediscover the neighborhood most of us drive through but never really notice when we’re on Santa Monica Blvd., or Melrose, or La Brea. We got to see all the little shops, restaurants, art galleries and murals at a walking pace, and we did a little window shopping and dreaming too.

Here are a few pix from the event and if you want to support this wonderful organization, please visit the AIDS Project Los Angeles website at apla.org

Meeting point was the Pacific Design Center.

The Abbey, the famous spot in the West Side, was the site of the VIP breakfast before the walk.

Around 30 thousand people showed up. This is 3rd Street and La Cienega, looking west.

Certificate of completion, another 10K under the belt!

Esta semana voy a ver “The Latino List” on HBO

26 Sep

This week HBO premieres a new documentary that I’m excited to see. “The Latino List” presents 25 influential Latinos who’ve had an impact in society and who represent us in one way or another, in this day and age in the USA.

The movie has an interesting mix of personalities in all trades, from pop culture and music icons (Pitbull, los Estefan) to politics (Henry Cisneros) to actors (John Leguizamo, America Ferrara, the ubiquitous Eva Longoria) and other faces you’ll recognize. There are writers (Sandra Cisneros), media personalities (El Piolín, Eduardo Sotelo) and even Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor.

I’m also happy to see it because, earlier this year, the production company that produced this documentary contacted me and asked for a photo of the financial mentor Julie Stav  that I took a few years ago. It was during an event honoring accomplished women and Julie was part of that group. Me cayó super bien la Julie, y le tomé una foto que después puse en la reseña del evento aquí en este blog. (How they found it I don’t know, pero me dio mucho gusto that the producers wanted to include it.) I’m not sure my picture made the final cut, but I’m excited to see the documentary nevertheless. La próxima vez que vea a Ms. Stav, I’m going to have to tell her this story.

So here’s the synopsis below and if you have HBO, the documentary premieres this Weds. Sept 28 at 9pm on HBO Latino and Thursday, September 29 at 8 pm on HBO. No se la pierdan!

Bye Summer! Getting ready for Missoni for Target on September 13th.

1 Sep

So it’s already September 1st and Summer 2011 is practically gone after this long holiday weekend. (Unless of course you live in Mexicali, B.C. My peeps from Mexicali would love to hear that summer is over, pero aguanten un poquito más cachanillas, ya falta menos para que pase el calorón termonuclear del verano mexicalense.)

I’m actually looking forward to fall for one reason. Call me frivolous, but I can’t wait for September 13th, when Target (Tar-jay, Targé or “La Target”) launches their exclusive Missoni for Target line.  And of course I’m not the only one. Twitter and facebook are abuzz with people commenting on the beautiful stuff they have coming out. You better believe I’m going to be in line during the wee small hours of the morning, waiting for the store to open, armed with my coffee mug.

Here’s a few of the items on my wish list. You can check out their complete line at www.target.com

This bike is going to be a best seller, van a ver.

Have your laptop travel in style.

New flats are in my future.

Fancy an Italian latte? Love this set.

Too much Missoni? I don't think so.

For your home office, stationary with the iconic stripes.

But they seemed so happy…

27 Jul

Forgive me for indulging in a little mid week chisme, but the recent celebrity breakups have me doing all sorts of mindless reflections. One could argue it’s a waste of time, but I figure since they’re practically everyone’s guilty pleasure, why not address it here?

Maybe they all got together and planned out the month (or at least their publicists did) but two very high profile famous couples called it quits this July, in a very quick succession.

You all heard of J-Lo and Marc Anthony’s parting of the ways during Carmageddon weekend , almost entirely wiping out all the other news. Ya salieron in every talk show, magazine, news outlet you can think of, and it’s interesting how mostly everybody is taking HER side while painting an unflattering portrait of Marc Anthony. Dicen que he was an insecure, controlling husband who also happened to have a few flings. Call me jaded, but I don’t think la J-Lo es una santa and she very well must have her own little issues as well. (Y’all know I’m not a big fan, but I digress.) I’m just saying it’s kind of unfair to him.

Sell more issues! Sell, sell, sell!

El único beneficiado fue el William Levy, who got plenty of air time and mentions on all the shows as the possible leitmotif of all this drama, after he shot that music video on the beach with her. (Hey Wills, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, right?)

Otros que nos dieron la sorpresa fue La Reina del Sur herself, Ms. Kate del Castillo,  who very casually announced, over Twitter, that she and her husband of 2 years, Aaron Diaz, are separating. It was one of those vague messages that don’t say anything and still meet with the pc codes of the industry. Según esto, se quieren tanto que se tienen que separarSay what?

Kate's Tweet.

I know it’s none of my business, but since I just saw La Reina del Sur (only like the best drama series en español ever) I can imagine it was uncomfortable for him to watch the love scenes with El Guero, El Gallego, and El Teo,  even with the ugly panzón character (I forget his name) and have to deal with her traveling all over the place to work and promote the series. Her dear old Dad, the wonderful actor Eric del Castillo, didn’t do her any favors by saying to People en Español they did not have “un matrimonio normal” just last week. Not only that, but the recent premiere of her new movie “Without Men”  in which she has a lesbian scene with Eva Longoria, has ignited more fuel to that rumor that has been going around ever since she ended her last marriage to the soccer player.

So who knows the real motives, and really who cares? The magazines/websites  will keep adding rumors and spin this just to sell more issues, get us all hooked until the next big chisme del corazón comes along.  All I know is, como decía mi amigo Alex Munguía, qepd, “En Hollywood, hasta el amor es falso.”

Here’s a link to Kate and Aaron’s happier days in a photogallery from Quien.com.

They’re calling it “Carmageddon” in LA and I’m getting the heck out of town!

If you live in Los Angeles then you know the price we pay for enjoying wonderful La La Land: Traffic. All.The.Time.

So it should be no suprise to anyone that the 405 freeway closure next weekend (July 16 and 17) will be a mess for the westside. (Pronostican que se va a hacer un desmadre.)

For over a month we’ve been hearing the warnings, but now that it’s almost here, you can sense people are really really worried about this. So heads up! If you live in the area, stay home. If you are planning on traveling by car that weekend, change you plans, and if you’re flying out of LAX, just plan to sleep at a hotel nearby. No se confíen amiguitos, this 405 closure sounds really scary. Por algo le están diciendo el “Carmageddon” en todos lados.

We’ve heard that Metro LA  enlisted Lady Gaga to tweet about it, so she can remind us. And they also asked Poncharello himself, the original CHiP, Erik Estrada to do a PSA (public service announcement) in English AND in Spanish.

Here’s the Spanish version from youtube. (Todavía no se le quita lo “pocho”. Lo digo con cariño, that’s the original pocho accent we grew up with.)

So avoid driving, do your grocery shopping in advance and prepare to stay home. Hey, what a novel idea!

Frivolous Friday Fun, puro chisme.

10 Jun

Es viernes, por fin. Yay!

Después de una semanita medio heavy, allow me to indulge in a little pop culture fix. Me puse a revisar mis online guilty pleasures y me encontré con varias cosas/happenings de esta semana:

1. Ricky Martin is back to his brunette ways, thank God! Remember his wild Guero phase? He was just messing with his God given beauty but somebody must’ve made him come to his senses.

This photo was taken on a trip to Buenos Aires, where he met with La Presidenta, Cristina Fernández. From People.com StarTracks today:

OK now Ricky, looking better. Don't go get all loco on us again with the blonde mullet. (Photo: People.com)

2. From Quien.com this week: Shakira wants us to know she’s all hot and heavy these days and just premiered her Rabiosa video/song which is very racy, to say the least. She’s a brunette flapper in a club and a pole dancer, with an emphasis on the pole dancer part….

I’m not gonna get all preachy y santurrona on you, but I don’t think I’m alone when I say I’ve lost all respect for her as an artist.  (Just saying!) Como puso alguien en el youtube “¿En donde quedó aquella artista que cantaba con la guitarra y componía buena música?” and “Congratulations on all your new fans that like your empty music.” Ouch! Some even wrote unflattering descriptions of her, the least of which is “es una vulgar,” pero eso sí, ya tiene more than 13 million hits su video! (And by the way, the song says “Featuring Pitbull” which is nowhere to be found on the video.)

Shakira and the pole. Really Shakira? There have to be other ways of feeling empowered as a woman...Super TACHA. (Foto from Quien.com)

Otra paranoia más: the correlation between cell phones & brain cancer

1 Jun

Add cell phone radiation to the ever growing paranoias on our list.

Yesterday the Word Health Organization issued a warning heard around the world,  saying “Heavy use of cell phones MIGHT cause brain cancer.”

Uuuuuuuts… de veras que cuando no es Juana, es Chana.

Do we need another reason to get freaked out by everyday life? To think that 30 minutes a day on the cell phone could potentially expose us to harmful radiation is not something we want to consider as we’re chatting away on our mobiles.

Heard an interesting conversation on “To The Point” with Warren Olney on kcrw.com today.  It was interesting to hear the skeptics versus the doctors versus the middle of the road scientists. Basically the middle of the road people say nothing is proven yet, but we’ve only had cell phone technology for less than 20 years, and it’s too soon to come to any conclusions. But imagine 5 billion people use cell phones every day and if any of these warning were true, we’d have to change our phone habits, which at this point is very unlikely.

I wonder if they’re doing more research on the subject? In the meantime I think I’m going to use my speakerphone much more often and think about getting a landline, again. El miedo no anda en burro señores.

To hear the debate on “To The Point,” click here to go to kcrw.com And check out if your phone is on the list of top radiation emissions: from CNN en Español.

This TV week is making me sad… ah cómo he llorado!

25 May

Ay!! Me está costando trabajo ver la tele esta semana…

Después de ver el finale de  Oprah, I confess I cried a little bit. Did you see it? Even though it sounded like a commencement speech from college, you have to admit it was a great way to say goodbye and inspire us  “until we meet again.” Godspeed Oprah!

Ahora me queda otro final, el de La Reina del Sur. Es el próximo lunes por Telemundo. Este como que me llegó muy rápido. So many things happened to Teresa Mendoza that it seems like a lifetime of suffering since we started watching her back in February. She’s endured, she’s fought back, she’s survived…for now.

El capítulo de anoche también “moved me to tears” (van a decir que soy una llorona, which I am, no offense taken.) There was this scene on a cliff by the sea, Teresa was crying and suddenly I just felt immense compassion for her. So much sadness! But she’s a criminal (we keep reminding ourselves)… and yet there is a decent human being there, a woman with a big heart, con mucho valor. We don’t see enough of these women on t.v., you know. There should be more interesting characters like her. And it takes a wonderful actress to play one. Kate del Castillo, you rock! Never once did you play her as a victim, or as the “sufrida” we all know from all the novelas de Televisa. This was one amazing role you pulled off. Tienes todo mi respeto, Reina del Sur.

La Reina llora.. y nos conmovió mucho.

Oprah, please don’t go. (Yes, I love Oprah.)

14 May

If you’ve been watching TV in the last 25 years (and unless you’re a caveman, who hasn’t?) it is very likely that you’ve seen the Oprah Winfrey show at some point in your life. Maybe you’re even one of the fans and loyal viewers who used to tape her on VCR in the 80’s and 90’s and then switched to DVR the last few years. That is where I fall in, and frankly, I am in denial about the next 2 weeks when the Oprah show comes to an end.

I remember I started watching her after school. I was in the 8th grade and really liked the way she talked about things. I also remember getting her weight loss book “Make the connection” a few years later- already in college with the freshman 15 adding up -and thinking, “La Oprah es de las mias! She understands me. Oprah is my friend.”

We all knew the show was ending and we thought we’d be ok, right? She let us know way in advance last September.  It’s been fun to go through the reminiscing, to see the classic clips from her 25 year history, and all the memories they stir up from when we watched the show originally. But as the countdown keeps moving on…”Only 15 shows left, only 10 shows left…etc.” I have been getting really sad. Who is going to be there every afternoon/evening for us to connect with? Where will I go for an AHA moment?? Who is going to inspire me- again- to get a new makeover as I just saw on her last makeover ever? Oh noooo, she can’t go! I know she’s all happy she’s going to her OWN Network, but she won’t be there full time and it just won’t be the same. Buu!

Anyhow, I think the lesson (she’s always asking “What is the lesson?”..) is that eventually, we all have to move along with our lives, embrace change, seek new opportunities, reinvent ourselves… YADA YADA YADA, bla bla bla! Es cierto pero no me voy a poner a sermonearlos aquí! I don’t know, maybe in the “new” spare hour, I will finally use my time to learn to crochet.

Today I received my monthly O magazine and there she is, saying goodbye again.  Got the sinking feeling that her millions of viewers are dreading May 25, when the show is off the air and we’re all left in limbo. Y ahora quien podrá ayudarme?? como dijo el Chapulin Colorado.

Her latest cover of the O magazine. Saying goodbye, the long goodbye.

Having fun at the Cannes Festival, but Salma what are you wearing??

11 May

The yearly Spring film festival at Cannes, France began this week. Someday I’d love to go…sigh.

(I like Salma, it’s just that sometimes I don’t agree with her taste in clothes.)

Buenos amigos, gustos medio extraños. Salma wears a "plumero sleeve" dress at the photo call for their movie in Cannes. Photo form the LA Times today.

On the other hand, I can’t wait to see the new movie from Woody Allen. “Midnight in Paris” premiered and opened at Cannes, and hopefully we can see it soon here in the States.
