Sarape Style Files: A case of the Mondays

23 Apr

Bueno pues… my weekend plans of attending the LA Times Festival of books were thwarted last minute. Plan B was not much fun at all, ¿pero qué le hacemos? Health comes first.

This is officially the second worst cold/flu of my life*. 10 days and counting, sigo afónica con un sore throat  to the point of answering a business call and having the guy identify me as “Cristina with the hoarse voice” (Ouch!)

Note to self: I will no longer try speaking today. Ya fue mucho “güiri-güiri”… I’ll try sign language.

(* The worst cold of my life was not actually a cold but pneumonia at the age of 9, which knocked me out of school for 2 weeks and forever left me scared of salir de la casa con el pelo mojado, but I digress.)

Today I had a case of the Mondays. It is raining in LA and I am trying to get back into the groove of things. This morning I got up like Linus from Peanuts, dragging my blanket, my bed calling out to me still. Does this ever happen to you?

Funny thing, on my way to lunch I saw this woman who was wearing a blanket as a raincoat. Well it’s not exactly a blanket, but a Mexican Sarape, the likes of which I had not seen for a while. Practical and warm? Yes. Stylish and pleasing on the eyes? Not exactly.

But it made me laugh. That is exactly what I felt like wearing.

Gripa, sal de este cuerpo ¡pero YA!!!!

Have a good week my friends.

Maybe it's not the best look in the world, but today I would've happily worn this outfit. Don't think it will make "The Sartorialist" any time soon!

Post Holiday Clean-Up. It’s over, people.

Ran into Rudolph this morning on his way to storage in an alley in Pasadena. Pobrecito. Time to stay locked in for the next 11 months.

Rudolph rumbo al almacen. Hora de guardar todo lo navideño.

And so it ends, my friends. At least mañana we have the Rosca de Reyes, the last festivity of the Season para los mexicanos y latinos. Better get to la panadería tonight before the big lines tomorrow.

UPDATE- 6PM Apparently, Downtown LA did not get the memo that the party was over, and they’re still going strong with the ‘Downtown on Ice’ skating rink at Pershing Square. Walked past it this evening and they had a party rocking, even with the balmy 73 degree weather. Skating is 8 bucks a pop and I believe this is the last weekend.

Giving the bloggey a mini- facelift

9 Aug

Did you notice? Mi blog has a new look.

Please bear with me as I try new design templates and see which one fits best.

(Ahorita este fue el que mas o menos quedó mejor con todos los sidebars y widgets, pero no me convence.)

I am now kind of missing my previous version with the banner/header, but don’t know how to go back to it.

(Update: OK I played around with it and found a similar version, let’s see if this works.)

Oh well, there will be more changes to come and in the meantime thanks for reading.

Little did she know…

La Gioconda never imagined she'd be adorning the streets of LA. Photo by yours truly.

Fin de semana con mis Homies

14 Nov

Random shots of the weekend. Time flies cuando te estás divirtiendo.

Wurstkuche. Downtown LA. Packed!

Hot dogs like you've never had before at Wurstkuche.

Off the wall!

We caught this show at LATC. "Latina on the Loose" is not be missed. We laughed. We cried. We related. Bravo Mina Olivera! Thanks to Miguel Angel Caballero for the invite. GO SEE IT! www.latinaontheloose.com.

After theater drinks at Las Perlas. Super cool.

The menu @LasPerlas. Puros drinks. Nothing here for the lightweights. Photo By Olivia E.

Nunca en la vida had we ever encountered this. Our bartender girl reminded us of the "soup nazi" episode from Seinfeld. You asked her for a drink and she would flat out tell you she would not make it for you because she didn't like it herself. Had an ice cold and unflinching demeanor as she said it. I guess we were all in shock to complain, because she gave us whatever the hell she wanted and we drank it.

Martha raved about Danny's "Verdaderos" Tacos, and the truck was conveniently parked outside Las Perlas. These were the choices.

Keeping it real: Tacos de Lengua just as M. likes them.

Mis homies, winding down at 1 am.

El fin de semana went by so fast.

12 Sep

48 hours is not enough. Here are some random shots from the weekend. Todos en downtown LA.

Walking on Main street at midnight.

New favorite sign: the "Million Dollar." Should say "Hotel Rosslyn". Que bueno que son "fire proof."

Over at La Fonda by MacArthur Park, nuestros amigos colombianos tocan padrisimo el vallenato y las cumbias.

Baile y baile. ¡Qué buena música!

Get a DF Taxi on your pillow

8 Sep

CB2.com sells this cool pillow for $26.95

CB2.com, the more “accesible” decoration store from Crate and Barrel and a good alternative to Ikea, has introduced a new line of decorative pillows. Cojines, pues.

¿Y que creen? They featured a taxi pillow line with images from Mexico DF, London, and NY.  They sell for $26.95 each, are machine washable and the reverse is solid white. Should you care to buy it: Click here.

Now if only I’d saved kitschy, ecclectic images like this, I’d screenprint some myself.

¡Sá-Ba-Do!

Just go!  A disfrutar el verano y el fin de semana.

Random shot of the day.

Not really Spanglish but made me smile. Esto se llama explotar el recurso, amiguitos.

Love the new Moleskine notebooks!

23 Feb

Just found out about these and thought I’d share with you. It’s the new “passions” line of Moleskine notebooks.  Son los que usaban Picasso, Hemingway y otros genios, segun esto.   Just may become a new addiction.

And now for a deeper question:

So what’s your passion???

Here are 2 of mine.
