At the 2012 Revlon Run/Walk

17 May

The 19th annual EIF Revlon Run/Walk benefitting the fight against women’s cancers was held last weekend at USC and it was an event to remember. I attended and walked as part of Team Macy’s (one of the sponsors) and it was a powerful experience to see so many people come together and participate.

People of all ages and entire families all showed up to support the cause for a 5k walk around the LA Coliseum. Everybody had someone special they were walking for. Most people wore big signs and bibs mentioning their loved ones battling cancer who they were walking for and supporting, or honoring their memory, which was extremely moving to read and see. I saw a few que casi me hacen llorar, so it definitely makes me appreciate health and that we must do everything in our power to fight this disease.

I took some pictures of the event which I wanted to share below. If you are interested in participating and/or making a donation to find a cure for cancer, please visit http://do.eifoundation.org and see how you can get involved. The statistics mentioned were pretty scary if you are a woman, but you CAN fight it and beat it if you detect it early on. So if you’re around the age of 35 or older, you should request, and demand to your doctor if needed, to get started with mammogram testing once a year.

Women, we need to take care of ourselves. ¡Cuidémonos todas! Here’s to good health, positive vibes and Godspeed in finding a cure for cancer.

Around the USC campus before the walk, the fair starts really early around 6:30 am.

At the starting line on Figueroa Ave, everybody looking good and ready for a 5K.

Team Macy’s 2012 supports the cause. Macy’s is one of the major sponsors of the RunWalk.

The beautiful and amazing Halle Berry is the Revlon Spokesperson and year after year speaks at the event. I loved her new curly hairdo, rizado chinito chinito!

Look at those dimples! Mr. Mario Lopez also was there to support.

Matthew Morrison of Glee gives a big hug to Lilly Tartikoff, one of the cofounders of the Run/Walk.

So inspirational! Lilly Tartikoff, co-founder of the Run/Walk, knows we will find a cure.

Julia Goldin, Global Chief Marketing Officer from Revlon, cheers everyone on at the starting line and talks about why it’s so important to join the cause.

Stacy Kiebler also walked and spoke on why she supoprts the cause, since it has affected her family. She’s very nice in person, pero no llevo al George Clooney!

Halle speaks and tells us women: Starting at 35, ask to get a mammogram! “Early detection is our best defense!”

And then I look at her and think, Hmm como que she looks like la Whitney Houston, verdad? Un poquito.

Confetti and cheers at the start.

All cancer survivors received a pink hat honoring them.

After the walk, a few refreshments inside the LA Coliseum.

Yeah, Macy’s. ¡Asi se compra!

Cupcakes for all!

Big party at the Coliseum lawn for thousands of people.

National Wear Red Day: Supporting Heart Health and Go Red Por Tu Corazón

3 Feb

Today, February 3rd, is National Wear Red Day and if I may, I’d like to make a little public service announcement on behalf of the American Heart Association and Macy’s.

When was the last time you ever thought about YOUR HEART? And I mean your heart as an organ that keeps you alive, not as a symbol of romance or love, or broken heart that inspires a sad love song.

It’s a very startling statistic to find out that women rarely pay attention to the fact that heart disease, and cardiovascular disease, are the number one killers of women. We think that heart attacks are exclusive to men. But I was shocked to find out that it takes more lives than breast and ovarian cancer among women, and that we do not consider the risks.

The Go Red Por Tu Corazón campaign website, en español! Hagan click para ir al sitio.Tell your mother, tell your sisters, tell your friends.

To raise awareness of heart disease among women, the American Heart Association launched an initiative called “Go Red for Women” back in 2004, and you will be happy to know it has made a difference.

They have also, very wisely, created the initiative in Spanish, calling it “Go Red Por Tu Corazón”  (love the title in Spanglish!) and is reaching out to the Hispanic Community. Spread the word!

I encourage you to visit the website, in Spanish (click here) and in English (click here) and learn how to participate, create awareness and take care of yourselves and your loved ones. It’s worth a few minutes of your time. It even has recipes and very useful tips on how to recognize the symptoms and warning signs of a stroke.

One of the sponsors of this campaign is my favorite store- MACY’S- who has contributed $28 million dollars to the cause since 2004.  They have a special sale going on today Friday Feb. 3, for anyone who shops at the store and is wearing red. What a great idea, since today ando de rojo! I think I’m gonna save me 20% on my purchases.

You can contribute and make a $2 dollar donation by getting the Go Red pin at Macy’s and by shopping on the exclusive WEAR RED items they have benefiting the American Heart Association.

You can purchase this pin for $2 and support Go Red Para Tu Corazón.

And you can also use the power of social media to donate. Visit the Macy’s fanbook page (click here) and create a Valentine by February 14th. They will donate $2 for each Valentine card sent, with a total of up to $250 thousand dollars in support of the Go Red Campaign.

Macy's is a wonderful sponsor of the Go Red Campaign. Click on the image to support the cause on their facebook page.

Walking the AIDS WALK LA 2011

18 Oct

The annual AIDS WALK Los Angeles took place last Sunday October 16th and it had an impressive turnout. I’ve done this walk for 3 years in a row and this year I noticed people were happier and much more spirited. Maybe it had to do with the weather, which was Biu-Ti-Ful…a bright, crisp, spotless LA Sunday morning, perfect for a 6 mile (10K) walk on the West Side.

I walked as part of the Macy’s Team, thanks to the invitation of my friend Olivia. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, Macy’s is committed to the community and especially to the AIDS cause, donating millions of dollars each year. (So think of that every time you shop and know somehow it comes back to benefit someone else.)

It was fun to rediscover the neighborhood most of us drive through but never really notice when we’re on Santa Monica Blvd., or Melrose, or La Brea. We got to see all the little shops, restaurants, art galleries and murals at a walking pace, and we did a little window shopping and dreaming too.

Here are a few pix from the event and if you want to support this wonderful organization, please visit the AIDS Project Los Angeles website at apla.org

“Womentum” at the Revlon RunWalk for Women 2011

9 May

Revlon RunWalk for Women was held last Saturday at the LA Coliseum.

Last Saturday at the LA Coliseum, almost 75 thousand people turned up for the annual Revlon RunWalk 2011 in honor and support of women who are fighting and beating cancer. Entire families and people of all ages showed up to honor the women in their lives. It was an empowering and uplifting event, and you could feel the love and energy everyone brought to the occasion, which was called “Womentum” ( a very creative and clever name, if you ask me.)

It was also nice to see Halle Berry, the beautiful actress and Revlon spokesmodel, in person, welcoming everybody at the starting line and cheering people on. She was there along with Alyson Hannigan, the actress from American Pie,  Eric Stonestreet from Modern Family, and Lilly Tartikoff, who heads the RunWalk effort.

The co-sponsors of the event were Macy’s and Toyota, with teams representing and doing the walk as well. It’s nice to see Macy’s continues to support great causes in support of women’s health and the community. Thanks to Olivia, Cause Marketing Manager at Macy’s,  for inviting me to the event. All in all a great day!

Halle Berry welcomes the crowd and motivates everyone to keep supporting the fight against cancer.

The starting line had confetti blasts, and off they went.

It was really exciting to enter the Coliseum through the tunnels at the end of the 5K.

At the Coliseum finish line, everybody had a party at the end.

People You Should Know/Conoce a Mayte Prida

28 Oct

Mayte Prida.

She’s a SURVIVOR!!

Has vencido al cáncer.

¿Cómo te describes a ti misma?

Gracias Mayte!

Un SuperHero de carne y hueso. Thank you Victor Perez.

6 Oct

Victor Perez, an unemployed construction worker from Fresno, California is the hero of the week.

Did you hear why? Because he was a good samaritan when there are hardly any left, because he acted out in spite of fear and did the right thing, because he is latino and you hardly see good news about latinos in the USA. He rescued an abducted 8 year old girl all on his own and made sure the criminal was taken to justice. Gracias Victor!!

Donated my hair to Locks of Love

9 Sep

http://www.locksoflove.org/donate.html

For Marisol Rosas, Alida Almaraz, Rocio Padilla, y Araiz, who have been through so much this year, and for everybody who is fighting this with hope and faith.

“Never, Never, Never Give Up!”  – Winston Churchill

Today I made one of the best decisions of my life. I cut 10 inches of my hair and donated it to the Locks of Love organization. This is their mission and vision:

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics.

Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

I had been thinking about it for some time and wanted to do something to contribute. And let me tell you, I have been blessed with plenty of hair to go around. And I had been wearing it long for many years now. It was time for a change. Don’t get me wrong, I was attached to it and I did love it, but the more I read about it, the more I felt I wanted to help. Then I remembered and thought about all the people I know of who are in treatment, and the decision was much easier.

The process is quite simple. Just show up to any participating salon with clean long hair, have them put it in a ponytail or braid and chop, chop, chop! It’s quite liberating. Then you put in a ziploc bag and the salon sends it out to them or you send it via regular mail. (Visit the website for more info: www.locksoflove.org)

As for the new length, it’s a little bit shorter than expected, but it’s quite nice. My stylist Victoria was so excited for me. She kept telling me “You’re going to make someone really, really happy.” But call me a hedonist. The happiness goes both ways. This is a very small thing I did that made ME really happy.

Thanks to the wonderful Victoria at Chignon Salon in Pasadena (es francés de chongo ok, no la palabra en español!) and to my friend Abril Macías for the great pix and for waiting for the end result.

Anatomy of a haircut scene: start with really long hair; braid it; chop it; send it; enjoy new look.

Fin de Cursos del Citizenship Class

6 Jun

One of the wonderful things in the USA is that you have great access to free education services either by local community colleges, churches or the state. Right now English and Citizenship seem to be the most popular subjects.

Such is the case of LACC, LA City College, where my wonderful, beautiful and amazing grandmother is learning English and preparing for her citizenship test. Oh, did I mention? She’s 91 years old. When she registered for the class, they asked her: ¿Por qué se quiere hacer ciudadana de los Estados Unidos? And she responded very clearly, “Porque quiero tener Voz y Voto.”

I think she loves to learn, and has a quick mind. Sometimes she’ll forget a name and dates like Who wrote the US Constitution or who was John Hancock? but generally, she LOVES the history of the United States. Ask her who is on the 100 dollar bill and she’ll say “Franklin… ¿qué no?” or who was the president of the USA during WW2 and she’ll say “Roosevelt era MUY BUEN presidente!”

Of course, she’s become the teacher’s pet. She has a wonderful and very patient teacher, Mr. Jose Rodriguez, who has helped her with her lessons, switching between Spanish and English to make sure everybody in class understands the lessons so they’re ready for the citizenship test.

Team Orange! Parece que se pusieron de acuerdo. My grandmother has become the teachers pet: Lilia Rodriguez y su maestro de inglés y ciudadanía, José I. Rodriguez. (No son parientes - No relation.)

This Saturday was the last class of the Spring Quarter. To celebrate, Mr. Rodriguez invited everybody to bring a typical dish from their home countries. Basically it’s her version of a Mexican lasagna, but with tortillas fritas and guajillo sauce, jack cheese rayado y aceitunas verdes.

So everybody had a good time and here is the photo to prove it. Thanks to Mr. Rodriguez for being such a good teacher and congratulations to all the class. Buena Suerte en su examen de ciudadanía. Imagine this: Más latinos CIUDADANOS, legales y preparados. We are very proud!!!

Congratulations to all the Students and GOOD LUCK in your citizenship test.

Corazón de Vida is a beautiful cause

24 Apr

People who make things happen are admirable. They are something else. They never cease to amaze. Such is the case of Yarel Ramos and Bricia López, and all the great people who support Corazón de Vida (CDV).

This is a wonderful group that raises money and actually makes monthly visits down to orphanages in Tijuana, Baja California, México to help more than 750 orphaned and abandoned kids. They serve 14 orphanages and their stats are pretty impressive: 2,250 meals served a day; 2,450 diaper changes per week; 750 showers per day; 1,204 loads of laundry per month.

As you can imagine, this requires a lot of effort and money. So in the spirit of helping out, last Thursday, Yarel, Bricia and friends  held a great fundraising event benefiting CDV at La Guelaguetza (the great Oaxacan restaurant owned by Bricia’s family) and the turnout was very positive. Over 100 people attended and had a great time, enjoying traditional dishes from Oaxaca from Guelaguetza’s famous kitchen, as well as live music and cool raffles: Dodger Tickets and memorabilia, Macy’s store giveaways, music cd’s. There was also mezcal and tequila sampling by Real de México.

So if you think you need some Karma “brownie points” (o le deben algo al universo) or are looking for a good cause to support, and if you are particularly interested in the well being of children, think of these orphans and please consider making a donation in money and/or time to Corazón de Vida. Every little bit helps and goes a long way. These kids will thank you and love you sincerely, and appreciate it more than you will ever know.

Here is the website for more information:

And here are a few snapshots of the event:

Celebrating Earth Day #40. Madre Tierra sólo hay una.

21 Apr

Hmmm, don’t you think we could all improve our efforts a little bit, at least?

Andres Ospina sings for Planet Earth. Check him out at www.andresospinamusic.com. (Photo by Laura Wills)

Andrés Ospina is a young Colombian singer/songwriter who is releasing his debut album Buenaventura in observance of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22.

The album was produced with the help of Lee Curreri, who has produced songs for artists such as Natalie Cole, made famous by his starring role in the 1980 movie Fame and the television series under the same name.

Aside from being a talented artist, Ospina has a story and a message to share with the world.  The singer/songwriter comes from a family of environmental activists who have fought for the cause for over 40 years.  In 2004, Andres embarked with his father on the Natibo Expedition, which connected the Orinoco, the Amazon and the Paraná basins by navigating the rivers of the South American continent, and then by sea, exploring the entire Pacific Coast of South America from Chile to Colombia.  Inspired by his travels and alarmed by the destruction of the ecosystems he witnessed first hand, Andres returned to California with his mind set on becoming an ambassador for the conservation effort.

Andres will be donating 20% of proceeds from album sales to the environmental non-profit Treepeople. Buenaventura is a digital-only release, and will be on iTunes after April 22, 2010.

The album is a mix of rock, cuban trova, reggae, blues and other caribbean sounds that carry the poetic lyrics that Andres writes.  His songs are an ode to the idea of going back to the basics, they sing to the joy of having time to connect with nature and celebrate love.

For the release of Buenaventura, Ospina and his band will offer an outdoor concert for friends and media.  The event will take place in TreePeople’s beautiful amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. April 22, 2010.

We invite you to watch the promotional video for the song “Sabia que iba a volver” and that you visit Andres’ blog: www.andresospinamusic.com

We should all be paying attention: Cancer Awareness Week

17 Apr

(Para mi amiga Marisol Rosas, the bravest ‘Previvor’ and fighter I know. Wishing you a speedy recovery and sending out all our good vibes so you can be well soon. Ánimo, Te queremos mucho!!)

Cancer is that subject that you never want to deal with, the word you never want to hear, the illness that most scares us. As Woody Allen says in one of his movies, “The most beautiful words in the English language are not ‘I Love You’ but ‘It’s Benign.” (He’s right!)

This week is “National Minority Cancer Awareness Week” (NMCAW) from April 18 through April 24. The American Cancer Society is urging Hispanics and all minorities to be aware of the statistics and recommendations to prevent cancer. We like to avoid screenings and checkups, and yet they are essential, just as eating good food and exercising frequently. We need to know these things and apply them to our daily lives to prevent and fight cancer. Health is our most important possession and we must all keep doing our part to be a healthy community. Even Placido Domingo, who was recently treated for colon cancer, acknowledged that he was lucky because he was treated early for it. And now he’s back to work, as you can read in the article (here) from the LA Times.

Here is the information the American Cancer Society shares in honor of Awareness Week:

Statistics

  • Hispanics are the fastest-growing and youngest minority group in the US.  45.5 million or 15 percent of the total US population is Hispanic.
  • Cancer is the second leading cause of death among Hispanics, accounting for 20 percent of deaths in adults and 13 percent of deaths in children.
  • About 1 in 2 Hispanic men and 1 in 3 Hispanic women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
  • Cancers of the stomach, liver, and uterine cervix have the highest incidence and mortality rates for Hispanics, especially among first-generation immigrants to the U.S.

Recommendations

  • Community-level engagement to work with families to promote a healthier life-style and include nutrition and physical activity.

-increasing access to healthy foods in schools, work and local eateries

-provide safe, enjoyable spaces for physical activity

-increase access to preventive services such as screenings

  • The American Cancer Society recommends regular screenings to improve the chances of a cure for some cancers by detecting it at an early stage.

-For women in their 20’s and 30’s, Clinical Breast Exam are recommended, preferably at least every three years; Women 40 and older should get mammograms annually.

-Colorectal screening is recommended for men and women starting at age at the age of 50

-Men should discuss prostate cancer screenings with their doctors to determine what level of screening is appropriate.

-Cervical cancer screening should be done every year.

  • Access the American Cancer Society website for more information, resources, services and programs at www.cancer.org/espanol or call toll free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for information in English and Spanish – 1-800-227-2345.

Bravo Ricky Martin!

Big news today. By now you’ve probably heard that Ricky Martin admitted he is gay, setting the blogs, web, and gossip tabloids crazy with comments. Most were kind, some were tolerant and a few facebook friends/acquaintances from Mexico were just plain rude and mean. And they know who they are.

No, most of us were not surprised and most of us suspected it… And most of us don’t care! I mean, have you heard his music lately, again? He is very talented, has great songs and seems to be a very decent human being all around. Why should it be our business if he decides to come out or not? He really didn’t have to say anything, but for some reason he felt he had to do it and I’m happy for him. He must feel free and relieved.

Last week I had a chance to photograph a great event hosted by the APLA (AIDS PROJECT Los Angeles) held at Macy’s Beverly Center. Mayc’s Inc. presented them with a 100K check in donation to their services to provide assistance to people with AIDS. (It’s a great organization and you should support them if you can: www.apla.org)

I was struck by the support and friendship (and great fashion sense) gay men have among each other. It’s a good thing to see. I only hope they would someday have all the rights granted to them as to heterosexuals. They should be able to live a fully equal life, just like everybody else. Me dan pena ajena!)

So bravo Ricky Martin. Good for you. Ya era hora.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to put “La Bomba” on my iPod and dance around the house in your honor. “Sube Sube Que la Bomba Va!”

Walking the Walk for AIDS Project LA

19 Oct
25 years and counting, the APLA's AIDS Walk is a wonderful event.

Now in it's 25th year, AIDS Walk LA had a great turnout for a good cause.

Ever wonder what it’s like to walk the streets of West Hollywood and West LA on a Sunday morning without having to worry about traffic and crossing the street? Last Sunday, about 10 thousand angelenos showed up to support a wonderful organization called AIDS Project LA (APLA) in it’s 25th edition of the AIDS WALK LA.  Everybody and their dogs made it a point to come and support. There were politicos (like Mayor Antonio Villarraigosa), celebrities, kids, seniors.. you name it.

I don’t need to tell you the statistics of this disease, but you might be interested in knowing that there are MANY things that still need to be done to create awareness, get help for people that need basic things like food and medical services, and of course, finding a cure! So with that mindset, all these people chose to walk and obtain donations that will go directly to the APLA.

The walk consists of a 10K (6 miles) and goes through major LA streets, which plenty of window shopping potential and entertainment. I had the good fortune of being invited by my friends Martha and Olivia, from Macy’s, sponsors of this event. As I’ve mentioned before, Macy’s does a great deal both financially and morally to support the fight against AIDS. They’ve raised over 28 million dollars in 20 years. So think about that next time you go shopping. This is a company that always gives back.

So enough about the plug…here are a few pictures of this great day when we did a 10K. We walked our socks off!

To start of the morning bright and early, Macy's hosted a VIP breakfast full of goodies and treats.
