Checking out La Reina del Sur dvd at the Library

Man, the weekends go by fast. Somehow 48 hours are not enough para hacer todo lo que quieres/tienes que hacer, especially when you know you’re going to spend a Sunday afternoon watching commercials and the SuperBowl. (OK the halftime with Madonna was amazing, right?… But I digress.)

On my list for the weekend was to squeeze in a visit to the Library in downtown LA, even if it’s totally out of the way for me. If I can just get in 30 minutes during the week, I am a happy camper. May I recommend you visit it (again!) and see the cool stuff they have going on?

Browsing through their DVD collections on the first floor, oh joy! There are Documentaries, Foreign Movies and TELENOVELAS. A really good selection for all of us who have discerning tastes. I was impressed.

Wouldn’t you know it? They already have the La Reina del Sur dvd on the shelf. If you haven’t already seen it, here’s your chance to see what all the hoopla was about last year. Mind you, this is an edited version on 2 volumes (12 dvds total) but it’s a great series, nevertheless. Or maybe you’re just a LRDS junkie and you just want to re-live your favorite moments con El Ratas y Don Epifanio, not to mention El Pote y el Batmancito. I miss them…You could buy the series at Amazon, but it will set you back 40 bucks. Here at the library you can check it out for free for 2 weeks.

La Reina del Sur, aka Kate del Castillo, y su entrevista post-escándalo Twitter

¿Se acuerdan hace unas semanas, cuando el mundo entero (incluyéndome a mi) opinó sobre el famoso tweet de Kate del Castillo y el escándalo que le siguió? Ah pues ahora Kate ya está dando entrevistas y platicó con Adela Micha (more on her later) about what REALLY happened that night she tweeted to El Chapo and what she REALLY thinks.

Hmmm. Maybe I’m not buying all her answers, but it makes for interesting television. There were a few moments in the interview where you could tell she was getting really unconfortable with Adela’s questions. Como siempre, la Adela no pierde la oportunidad “to make it about her” y le dice “yo te voy a decir, si me permites, lo que pienso al respecto….” (like we care!) En fin, dejara de ser Adela y dejara de ser la diva de las noticias.

Anyway, judge for yourselves, si es que todavía les interesa el tema. La Reina del Sur siempre da de que hablar, no? By the way, I’m still a fan, Kate.

OMG! Kate's reaction to her post-twitter scandal.

Ooops! I think La Reina del Sur lost it. El escándalo de Kate del Castillo en Twitter.

This morning  el Twitter Universe de los Latinos is going berserk with retweets of a rant from Kate del Castillo, alias “La Reina del Sur.” And now I’m going to have to resort to my voice in Spanglish. Porque no me explico why the heck she thought it would be a good idea to give the whole world her unsolicited opinion on life. For example, she does NOT  believe in marriage, monogamy, in religion, in the Pope nor in government, pero que dice que sí cree en el sexo, en sentir su cuerpo, en las emociones fuertes y en uno de los delincuentes mas famosos de México, el Chapo Guzman. Hasta le dio una lista de ideas para hacer el world a better place, empezando con llevar alcohol a los asilos de ancianos. “No estaría padre que empezara a traficar con el bien?“… pregunta. What??

Con todo respeto, because I think she’s a wonderful actress and a professional, I would beg to differ.

¿Kate, qué te pasó? Tú que casi nunca dabas escándalos, y hoy todo el mundo te está mandando tweets medio groseros… You did not need this, especialmente ahora que estás saliendo más en la television gringa. Tanto trabajo que te ha costado. Is this a publicity stunt? Porque ya sabes que dicen que “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.” Maybe that was the plan?

I don’t get it. Not that my opinion matters anyway. I just think it’s a shame for an accomplished actress (si no es que la mejor de México) to go off on a rant about things that nobody cares about, diciendo puras incoherencias, tarnishing her image… Maybe she wants to do away with her “nice girl”  in real life? Quien sabe. I guess tomorrow it will be old news.

Or maybe it has to do with the year 2012 and all those predictions. Some people think this might be a cue to go off on a liberating storm and having their honest voices heard once and for all. Maybe they think “What the hell! If it’s all going to end, I might as well go down with a bang.”

Adiós, Reina del Sur. Ya te extrañamos.

Se nos acabó el corrido de la Teresita Mendoza, y así como escuchamos en el opening durante toda la novela, “un día desapareció Teresa la Mexicana, dicen que está en la prisión, otros que vive en Italia, en California o en Miami, en la Unión Americana…”

¿Ustedes creen que está en el “Gabacho” como dicen los de la novela? (Pobre la mujer del Batmancito que se quedó con ganas de venirse para acá.)

The grand finale did not disappoint and made us hold our breath till the last clip. That balacera scene was one of the best I’ve ever seen.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, this was NOT a novela, this was a drama series, an excellent one, the first of it’s kind in Spanish television, and one we will not easily repeat soon. (Don’t even get me started on the tacky and tasteless “Mi Corazon Insiste” clips and promos, yo paso! Please spare me Telemundo.)

I will not spoil the ending para todos los que la están viendo en México y en España, but I’ll say this: ¡Que Viva El Pote!! Todas queremos un soldado y perro guardián como él, leal hasta el final. Sabía quien era y cuál era su misión en la vida. Nunca se quitó las botas ni el sombrero. A mucha honra Potemkin Gálvez. ( A ver si para la segunda parte vemos que el hijo de Teresa se llama Oleg Potemkin, como dice mi amiga Olguita.)

Y a la mexicana mis respetos. Te vamos a extrañar Teresa/Kate del Castillo. Ojalá te nominen al Emmy y te lo ganes. Este es un rol que nunca se nos va a olvidar y que sólo tú pudiste hacer. Eres nuestra Mejor Actriz!

El amor platónico de Tessa y Oleg

Cómo les quedó el ojo con el capítulo de anoche con la mexicana y el ruso, eh?

Todos sabemos que “they’re made for each other,” pero también que hay amores que no pueden ser. Maybe in another lifetime.

Cuando Oleg le dice a su Tessa que “she’s the one“…pero que la prefiere de socia y amiga, se me hizo chiquito el corazón. Ay Oleg!!

Son lo máximo estos últimos capítulos de La Reina del Sur. ¡Animo mexicana!!! Tú puedes…Duro con ellos!

El gran final de La Reina del Sur es el lunes 30 de mayo por Telemundo.

Cuando Oleg le dice a su Tessa "Yo hubiera podido enamorarme locamente de ti, habría sido fácil...eres inteligente, hermosa, valiente...pero a cambio hubiera perdido a una gran socia y amiga..." creo que todas sufrimos.

This TV week is making me sad… ah cómo he llorado!

Ay!! Me está costando trabajo ver la tele esta semana…

Después de ver el finale de  Oprah, I confess I cried a little bit. Did you see it? Even though it sounded like a commencement speech from college, you have to admit it was a great way to say goodbye and inspire us  “until we meet again.” Godspeed Oprah!

Ahora me queda otro final, el de La Reina del Sur. Es el próximo lunes por Telemundo. Este como que me llegó muy rápido. So many things happened to Teresa Mendoza that it seems like a lifetime of suffering since we started watching her back in February. She’s endured, she’s fought back, she’s survived…for now.

El capítulo de anoche también “moved me to tears” (van a decir que soy una llorona, which I am, no offense taken.) There was this scene on a cliff by the sea, Teresa was crying and suddenly I just felt immense compassion for her. So much sadness! But she’s a criminal (we keep reminding ourselves)… and yet there is a decent human being there, a woman with a big heart, con mucho valor. We don’t see enough of these women on t.v., you know. There should be more interesting characters like her. And it takes a wonderful actress to play one. Kate del Castillo, you rock! Never once did you play her as a victim, or as the “sufrida” we all know from all the novelas de Televisa. This was one amazing role you pulled off. Tienes todo mi respeto, Reina del Sur.

La Reina llora.. y nos conmovió mucho.

Después de ver el capítulo del viernes pasado, ya mas o menos se nos ha acomodado la historia completa de Teresa Mendoza en “La Reina del Sur” y nos estamos preparando para el gran final. Creo que me voy a deprimir la semana que entra (después de despedir a Oprah el miércoles, sigue el final de La Reina el lunes 30 de mayo.)

Se nos fue rapidísimo, y aunque se tomaron libertades creativas con la novela de Pérez Reverte, creo que todos los que la estamos viendo en Telemundo (y en España y en México) estamos de acuerdo que esta serie está excelente. I wish it didn’t have to end!! ¿Ahora de qué vamos a hablar en el “water cooler” todas las mañanas en la oficina?

Este fin de semana nos encontramos estas fotos en Twitter en el feed de Kate del Castillo. Se ve que todos los cueros de LRDS se llevan bien entre ellos. Ahi están el Gallego, el Teo, y Oleg (mi favorito!) con Kate y Conejo. Qué suertudos que la pasan bien fuera de cámaras también. Nomás faltaron el “Pote” y el GÜERO!! ¿En dónde los dejaron?

La Reina del Sur keeps it real. ¿Quieres conocer a la Mexicana?

¿Están siguiendo La Reina del Sur? I’m as hooked as ever. Me da gusto que le esté yendo bien y que por fin Telemundo tenga un super hit. Todo el mundo está hablando de la novela y de Kate…que qué bien actúa, que están picados, que no se la pierden.

Creo que lo que más me gusta de LRDS es que no parece novela, parece más una serie como las gringas, tipo “tv drama”. Y soprende mucho que los escritores, y hasta el mismo Telemundo Network, no censuran mucho el lenguaje. Se edita con efectos y le bajan el volumen, pero bien sabemos que están mentando madres. ¡Qué bueno! It keeps it real. Así como cuando Teresa le reclama a Patricia (en el capítulo de anoche) que es racista, entonces le pregunta si nunca ha dicho cuando la ha visto que es una “pin…sudaca tercermundista“…WOW.  Y esa es solo una de tantas durante los episodios, algo que al menos yo no había visto antes en novelas, verdad Mexicanas?

"A ver Patricia, júrame que cuando me has visto nunca has dicho 'Pin*** sudaca tercermundista. ¡A ver júramelo!!"

Siguiendo con LRDS: Good news para los que viven en Los Angeles. Este domingo 10 de Abril.  Kate del Castilo, La Reina del Sur herself, tendrá una presentación personal en un evento del Club de Noveleras de Telemundo. Es en Plaza México, dirección: 3100 East Imperial Highway, Lynwood, CA 90262.  Están invitando desde las 12pm hasta las 4pm, pero recomiendan que lleguen temprano porque esperan a mucha gente. (And take a hat because it’s outdoors! Vamos a necesitar sunscreen también.) Si les gustaría saludarla, ahí va a estar junto con otros actores de Telemundo: Aylin Mujica, Eugenio Siller, entre otros. Setting my DVR to “La Reina del Sur”

Count me in for watching La Reina del Sur on Telemundo.

The novela, inspired by the best selling book La Reina del Sur, by Arturo Perez Reverte, premieres Monday 2/28 on Telemundo and it’s already looking good.

It’s the story of Teresa Mendoza, a Mexican woman who dominated the world of drug trafficking and narcos in Spain and Europe. She’s not exactly what you call a “role model,” but she’s definitely more entertaining and interesting than the average Cinderellas you see every night on Univision.

Kate del Castillo is Teresa Mendoza, and almost everybody who’s seen the first episode (El Club de Noveleras de Telemundo, for example) and who knows her work back from when she started in Televisa can say THIS is her best role yet. She is a natural fit to play the tough woman Teresa is. She’s not afraid to do violent scenes, or look vulnerable and go sans makeup like she did for most of the first episode. Cero maquillaje, cero glamour. She also is NOT shy in showing her body, and believe me, she shows it. Es toda “muscle”, que bárbara! Even on the tight shots, y la cámara no perdona nada. Esta mujer es puro ejercicio y salud.  We are putting her picture up in the office and using her as inspiration to go work out.

As for the other cast, us girls can’t complain. There’s Rafael Amaya, the hunk from Alguien Te Mira, Gabriel Porras, who’s pretty much irreconocible y feo, Humberto Zurita, one of the great Mexican actors, and a bunch of fresh handsome faces we’ll get to see throughout.

But it’s the story that makes LRDS addictive and even sometimes hard to watch. This is no fairy tale. It deals with narcos, violence, crime, betrayal, death, and somehow they’ll blend in the love story. This is not your typical novela, none of the Telemundo ones are. La Reina del Sur feels more like a tv series with situations that you know are happening in real life, with dark and evil characters and the “reality” of the drug world. It’s shot mostly on location in Mexico, Colombia, España y Marruecos, so it looks different than anything that’s shot on the set. Hey, natural lighting, what a concept!

So time will tell if LRDS is a hit, but we think so. Let’s see what the ratings say for Telemundo, but so far, we give it thumbs up…(usando el sistema del Roger Ebert) and it earns a spot on our DVR.
