Ooops! I think La Reina del Sur lost it. El escándalo de Kate del Castillo en Twitter.

This morning  el Twitter Universe de los Latinos is going berserk with retweets of a rant from Kate del Castillo, alias “La Reina del Sur.” And now I’m going to have to resort to my voice in Spanglish. Porque no me explico why the heck she thought it would be a good idea to give the whole world her unsolicited opinion on life. For example, she does NOT  believe in marriage, monogamy, in religion, in the Pope nor in government, pero que dice que sí cree en el sexo, en sentir su cuerpo, en las emociones fuertes y en uno de los delincuentes mas famosos de México, el Chapo Guzman. Hasta le dio una lista de ideas para hacer el world a better place, empezando con llevar alcohol a los asilos de ancianos. “No estaría padre que empezara a traficar con el bien?“… pregunta. What??

Con todo respeto, because I think she’s a wonderful actress and a professional, I would beg to differ.

¿Kate, qué te pasó? Tú que casi nunca dabas escándalos, y hoy todo el mundo te está mandando tweets medio groseros… You did not need this, especialmente ahora que estás saliendo más en la television gringa. Tanto trabajo que te ha costado. Is this a publicity stunt? Porque ya sabes que dicen que “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.” Maybe that was the plan?

I don’t get it. Not that my opinion matters anyway. I just think it’s a shame for an accomplished actress (si no es que la mejor de México) to go off on a rant about things that nobody cares about, diciendo puras incoherencias, tarnishing her image… Maybe she wants to do away with her “nice girl”  in real life? Quien sabe. I guess tomorrow it will be old news.

Or maybe it has to do with the year 2012 and all those predictions. Some people think this might be a cue to go off on a liberating storm and having their honest voices heard once and for all. Maybe they think “What the hell! If it’s all going to end, I might as well go down with a bang.”

¡Es Hispana y es Mujer! Obama nominates Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court Chief Justice

Great news today for the Hispanic Community in the United States. Sonia Sotomayor was nominated by President Obama to serve as justice of the Supreme Court. For the first time ever, a person of hispanic descent has a chance to occupy a post in the highest court in the U.S. She would also be the third woman to serve (Sandra Day O’Connor, who has retired, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is still serving, are the other two.) This news has dominated today, and with good reason.

 Most of the political experts agree that it was a smooth political move on Mr. Obama’s part, since we are the largest growing minority (thinking ahead for more votes) and wants to keep us happy. While that may be true, she does have an inspiring life story that is also very appealing: born and raised in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, her father died when she was 9;  her mother, a nurse, worked 2 jobs to support her and her brother. She was diagnosed with diabetes at age 8. As a girl she used to avidly read Nancy Drew and watch Perry Mason on TV, probably inspiring her to become a lawyer. She went to Catholic School. She received a scholarship at Princeton, where she said she was so shell shocked at first that she didn’t raise her hand up in class for weeks… but then came into her own and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She went on to Yale Law School, where she was the editor of the Law Journal. In her profession she has been a district attorney in NY, then a partner at a corporate law firm, and then spent 17 years on the bench as a federal court judge, appointed by George H. Bush and  then confirmed by Bill Clinton. Wow!! Isn’t that a great life resumé?

As Obama narrated her life story- maybe sometimes echoing his own- he praised her and reminded everyone that no dream is beyond reach. Another nice moment: Sonia presenting her family and her mother Celina, saying she was the one person in life she aspired to be. Her mom sat in the front seat weeping with joy. (Asi somos pues, muy llorones!) Most of all, I liked one of the reasons the president said he chose her… experience. “The life of the law has not been made up of logic but experience…Experience that can give a person the common touch and a sense of compassion.”
